A conveyor system integrator owns the whole flow, not one piece of equipment: conveyor, sortation, controls, and the software interfaces that route every unit. The difference between an integrator and a supplier shows up at the handoffs, where equipment from different manufacturers has to hit rate as one system. Research on automated warehouse sorting describes the chain an integrator has to make work end to end: bins retrieved from an AS/RS are placed on an accumulation belt, conveyor delivers them to an induction station where items are isolated onto the sorter, a recognition station scans the barcode to identify each item, and the sorter discharges it via chute to the assigned packing lane.
Every one of those transitions is an integration point: rate matching into induction, gap control ahead of the sorter, scan read rates at the recognition station, and lane capacity downstream of the chute. Equipment vendors warrant their own boxes. The integrator owns the interfaces between them.
Warehouse conveyor systems integrate with a WMS through a control layer, usually a warehouse control system or PLCs running on platforms like Beckhoff or Allen Bradley. The WMS sends order data and routing instructions to the WCS, which drives the motors, diverts, scanners, and sortation logic in real time. Done right, every package is tracked from receiving through shipping without manual routing. Done wrong, packages stall at diverts and misroute at sortation.

Most integrators design the conveyor and hand the conveyor controls to someone else, which puts the riskiest part of the project outside the design team. Controls are roughly 35 percent of total project cost against about 48 percent for the conveyor equipment itself, so the split sends a third of the budget to a party that did not design the flow.
The recurring failures are predictable: code nobody at the plant can read, PLCs that run machines but tell the WMS nothing, and counts retyped by hand because the floor and the software never got connected.
Connecting a conveyor control system to enterprise software creates an IT to OT boundary that has to be designed, not assumed. NIST SP 800-82 Revision 3 is the federal guide for securing operational technology, covering system topologies, threats, vulnerabilities, and recommended safeguards for control environments.
Ask any integrator how the control network is segmented from the business network, who holds remote access credentials, and how PLC and HMI backups are stored. Those answers belong in the design phase, not after go-live.
ASME B20.1 addresses conveyor safety across design, construction, installation, maintenance, inspection, and operation, with dedicated sections on guards and guarding, controls, transfer, loading, and discharge points, and risk assessment and risk reduction. Transfers, merges, and sorter discharges are exactly where integrated lines add pinch and access hazards, and OSHA machine guarding rules require protection from nip points and rotating parts in the machine area.
