Eliminate Dead Walk Time

An oval track rotates carriers along the shortest path to the access opening, delivering items directly to the operator and removing the walking, searching, and scanning that consume most of a manual picker's shift.

Run Multiple Operators on One Pod

A pod of horizontal carousels runs as a single-operator station during normal demand, then splits into multiple work zones at peak so several pickers fulfill orders in parallel. One system absorbs seasonal volume swings without adding floor space.

WORKING USING CAROUSEL MODULES

Testimonials

"When someone asks if they should automate, my answer is simple, call HOJ. I may not know every detail of automation, but I know they do"

- Mike Haslam

"Container unloading was hard on our workers. HOJ’s powered conveyor eliminated heavy lifting and turned it into a safer automated process."

- Michael Moser

"Automation removed a lot of manual prep work by automatically batching tasks based on our criteria. It freed up supervisors and managers and made daily execution much simpler."

- Todd Peay

"Having a local automation partner makes a huge difference. Being able to meet on site, walk the operation, and talk through ideas in real time leads to better solutions than phone calls or video meetings ever could."

- Scott Bryan

Horizontal Carousel Module Specifications

Kardex HCM systems are configured by carrier payload tier and overall carousel length. Use this table to match your inventory profile to the right configuration before you request a quote.

All carrier tiers support 38 mm shelf spacing and 180-degree rotating shelves, allowing dense, customizable storage of mixed bin sizes within a single unit.

Vertical Carousel Modules in an IKEA Facility

Optimize Low-Ceiling Storage

Horizontal carousels store thousands of bins in a compact picking zone of just 5 to 10 square meters per station, making them the right choice for buildings where ceiling height rules out vertical lift modules or vertical carousels.

Hoj’s 60+ Year Engineering Edge

Hoj Innovations doesn’t just sell machines; we provide a local service fleet of 70+ vehicles and in-house installation crews to ensure your WarehouseOS integration remains seamless and supported 24/7.

When a Horizontal Carousel Fits Your Operation

Horizontal carousels are not the right fit for every facility. Use the criteria below to evaluate whether a pod-based rotating system matches your operation before requesting a quote.

Strong Fit Indicators

Your operation is a strong candidate for a horizontal carousel module if you recognize most of these conditions:

  • Limited ceiling height. Available clear height between 8 and 14 feet, where vertical systems cannot reach the cube needed to justify the investment.

  • High-throughput batch picking. You fulfill hundreds of orders per shift with multiple line items each, where batch picking across pods can collapse picks per order into picks per zone.

  • Medium and slow-moving SKU mix. Inventory profile leans toward thousands of moderate-velocity SKUs rather than a small set of extremely fast movers.

  • Operator scaling needs. Order volume swings significantly between normal and peak periods, and you need a system that can flex from one operator to several without rebalancing the warehouse.

  • Compact picking zone constraints. You want to consolidate the entire pick area into a single 5 to 10 square meter station for supervision, security, or climate control.

Common Applications

Horizontal carousels perform especially well in pharmaceutical and healthcare distribution, e-commerce small-item fulfillment, electronics and semiconductor parts storage, automotive and industrial parts depots, library and archival retrieval, and kitting operations supporting manufacturing lines.

When to Consider Alternatives

A horizontal carousel may not be the right system if your facility has tall ceilings you want to fully use, you handle very heavy or oversized items beyond carrier payload limits, or you need maximum cube density above all else. In those cases a vertical lift module or vertical carousel module typically delivers better cube utilization for the floor space consumed.

Questions Worth Answering Before You Buy

Before specifying a system, document your peak picks per hour, your average lines per order, the dimensional profile of your top 200 SKUs, your available clear ceiling height, and your integration requirements with existing WMS or ERP software. These five data points drive the carrier payload tier, the unit count per pod, and the realistic ROI window for any horizontal carousel deployment.
