AMR cross-belt sortation uses autonomous mobile robots fitted with a small powered conveyor belt mounted crosswise on top. Each robot carries one item to its assigned destination, then runs the belt to push the item sideways into a chute or bin. Unlike a fixed cross-belt loop sorter, the belt rides an independent robot with no track.

How does an AMR cross-belt sorter work?

An AMR cross-belt sorter loads one item onto each robot at induction, where a scanner reads its barcode and assigns a destination. The robot navigates a floor grid to the correct divert point, then powers the belt mounted across its top to push the item sideways into the chute or bin. The robot returns to induction for the next item. Because the belt actively ejects the item rather than relying on gravity, a cross-belt handles small, light, and irregular items, including polybags, with precise placement into narrow chutes.

When is cross-belt better than tilt-tray?

A cross-belt uses a powered belt to eject items with controlled placement, which suits small, light, irregular, and bagged items and dense chute layouts. A tilt tray drops items by gravity, favoring flat, rigid, stackable goods and lower tray cost. On an AMR platform, both run on the same fleet, so the divert mechanism follows your item profile rather than being fixed at install.
