A tilt tray sorter sorts items on a loop of individual trays that travel past a series of chutes. When a tray reaches its destination, it tilts to slide the item off by gravity into the chute. It handles mixed and fragile goods at throughput rates commonly between 5,000 and 18,000 items per hour.

Tilt tray sorter at a glance

A tilt tray sorter, also called a tilting tray sorter, runs a train of trays around a continuous loop or an inline over-and-under path. Each tray is individually addressed by the controls and carries one item. At the assigned destination, the tray tilts to one side and the item slides off by gravity into a chute, then the tray returns and locks level for the next cycle. Because items rest on flat trays until deliberate discharge, the tilt tray handles fragile, high-value, and irregular goods gently, with mis-sort rates typically below 0.5 percent. Layouts can be oval, rectangular, or circular to fit the floor, and trays are usually bidirectional so they discharge to either side. The tray sorter is a vendor-neutral category that HOJ specifies and integrates to your product mix.

How does a tilt tray sorter work?

A tilt tray sorter connects individual trays into a train that circulates around a loop. An item is inducted onto each tray, manually or by an automated induction belt, and its destination is recorded. As the tray approaches that destination, a tilting mechanism activates, often a cam engaged by a wheel under the tray or an electric actuator, and the tray tips to one side so the item slides into the chute below. After discharge, the tray returns to level and locks in place, ready to load again. Because discharge relies on a controlled tilt and gravity rather than a push, the motion is gentle, which protects fragile product and keeps damage low across a wide mix of items.

Where are tilt tray sorters used?

E-commerce fulfillment. Sorting mixed cartons, polybags, and flats to packing and ship lanes.

Parcel and post. Routing packages and mail to many chutes at high accuracy.

Fragile and high-value goods. Discharging gently by gravity to protect electronics and glassware.

Retail and apparel. Handling a wide SKU mix into order or store-destination chutes.

Dense destination layouts. Serving many closely spaced chutes around one loop.

What is the difference between a tilt tray sorter and a cross belt sorter?

Both are loop sorters that run a train of carriers, but they discharge differently. A tilt tray sorter tips the tray so the item slides off by gravity, using a simpler mechanical tray and giving a gentle, controlled drop. A cross belt sorter runs a powered belt on each carrier to push the item off actively, which gives precise placement and lets items recirculate on the loop. Choose tilt tray for gentle gravity discharge of fragile and mixed goods. Choose cross belt for active, precise discharge and recirculation. The comparison below frames the choice.

Testimonials

"When someone asks if they should automate, my answer is simple, call HOJ. I may not know every detail of automation, but I know they do"

- Mike Haslam

"Container unloading was hard on our workers. HOJ’s powered conveyor eliminated heavy lifting and turned it into a safer automated process."

- Michael Moser

"Automation removed a lot of manual prep work by automatically batching tasks based on our criteria. It freed up supervisors and managers and made daily execution much simpler."

- Todd Peay

"Having a local automation partner makes a huge difference. Being able to meet on site, walk the operation, and talk through ideas in real time leads to better solutions than phone calls or video meetings ever could."

- Scott Bryan
