A spiral accumulation conveyor buffers product on a continuous helical belt, holding it between upstream and downstream equipment when the line pauses. It works first-in, first-out: each item stays on its section of belt from entry to exit. The system is self-controlling, smoothing speed differences between processes without adding floor space.

Key facts

•   Buffers product vertically in a compact footprint, no extra floor space

•   First-in, first-out: each item exits in the order it entered

•   Self-controlling: drive speeds link to upstream and downstream conveyors

•   Only controls needed are full/empty belt sensors

•   Handles cartons, trays, bottlepacks, bags, crates, totes, bottles, cans

•   Balances speed mismatches, time delays, and intermittent processing

How does a spiral accumulation conveyor work?

A spiral accumulation conveyor stores product on a single continuous belt wound in a helix. When the downstream line keeps up, product passes straight through. When the downstream pauses, the belt fills with product instead of jamming the line upstream, and when downstream restarts, the belt releases in the same order it filled. This first-in, first-out flow keeps product sequence intact, which matters for dated or batched goods. The system is self-regulating: one end of the belt tracks the feeding conveyor speed and the other tracks the discharge, so the accumulator absorbs the difference automatically, with sensors only needed to flag a full or empty belt.

Where is spiral accumulation used?

•   Bottling and canning lines balancing filler and packer speeds

•   Buffering product during downstream changeovers or stoppages

•   Parcel and case lines with variable downstream pace

•   Dated or batched goods that must hold sequence (FIFO)

•   Intermittent processes needing an offline buffer

•   Any line where accumulation is needed but floor space is not available

Why use a spiral accumulator instead of a floor accumulation table?

A floor accumulation table or mass-flow table consumes large amounts of floor space and often re-orders product, breaking sequence. A spiral accumulation conveyor buffers the same volume vertically in a fraction of the footprint and preserves first-in, first-out order. Because it is self-controlling, it smooths speed differences between connected processes automatically, which keeps the whole line running during a downstream pause instead of stopping upstream.

Testimonials

"When someone asks if they should automate, my answer is simple, call HOJ. I may not know every detail of automation, but I know they do"

- Mike Haslam

"Container unloading was hard on our workers. HOJ’s powered conveyor eliminated heavy lifting and turned it into a safer automated process."

- Michael Moser

"Automation removed a lot of manual prep work by automatically batching tasks based on our criteria. It freed up supervisors and managers and made daily execution much simpler."

- Todd Peay

"Having a local automation partner makes a huge difference. Being able to meet on site, walk the operation, and talk through ideas in real time leads to better solutions than phone calls or video meetings ever could."

- Scott Bryan
