Robotic parcel sortation uses autonomous mobile robots to scan, route, and drop individual parcels into assigned destinations, replacing fixed conveyor sorters. Each robot carries one parcel, reads its barcode, and delivers it to a chute or bag based on software routing rules. The grid is floor-mounted, so capacity scales by adding robots.

Key facts

Sorts individual parcels, polybags, and small cartons

•   Robots navigate by QR codes on the floor

•   Capacity scales by adding robots, not rebuilding the line

•   tSortPost robots: 30-minute full charge, up to 6-hour runtime

•   Divert options: crossbelt or tilt-tray

•   No floor anchoring, sprinklers, or hardwired power required

How does robotic parcel sortation work?

A robotic sortation system runs in four stages. Parcels are inducted onto robots manually or by automatic pick-and-place. A scanner reads each barcode and assigns a destination. The robot navigates the grid to the correct sort point and drops the parcel into its container.

Robots return to charge between cycles. Because routing lives in software, destinations can be added or moved without physical rework, which is the core difference between robotic sortation and fixed mechanical sorters.

Where is robotic parcel sortation used?

  E-commerce order fulfillment

•   Last-mile and regional parcel hubs

•   Store replenishment and omnichannel distribution

•   Reverse logistics and returns processing

•   Cross-dock transfer

•   Microfulfillment in constrained footprints

Why choose robotic sortation over a conveyor sorter?

Fixed cross-belt and tilt-tray sorters move parcels at very high rates but bolt to the floor, require permits and sprinklers, and cannot change after install. Robotic systems trade some peak throughput for flexibility: modular, relocatable, and scalable by adding robots. For operations with shifting order profiles or seasonal peaks, that adaptability typically outweighs raw maximum speed.

Testimonials

"When someone asks if they should automate, my answer is simple, call HOJ. I may not know every detail of automation, but I know they do"

- Mike Haslam

"Container unloading was hard on our workers. HOJ’s powered conveyor eliminated heavy lifting and turned it into a safer automated process."

- Michael Moser

"Automation removed a lot of manual prep work by automatically batching tasks based on our criteria. It freed up supervisors and managers and made daily execution much simpler."

- Todd Peay

"Having a local automation partner makes a huge difference. Being able to meet on site, walk the operation, and talk through ideas in real time leads to better solutions than phone calls or video meetings ever could."

- Scott Bryan
