A parcel sorter is an automated system that routes packages to the correct destination by scanning each item and diverting it to a chute, lane, or carrier. Parcel sorting systems range from linear diverters that handle under 30 items per minute to high-speed loop sorters that process up to 450 parcels per minute.

Parcel sorter at a glance

A parcel sorter, or parcel sorting system, automates the movement of packages from induction to their shipping destination. A scanner or camera identifies each parcel, a warehouse control system decides where it goes, and the sorter diverts it to the right chute, lane, or carrier without a manual touch. Automated parcel sorting falls into two broad families: linear sorters that divert parcels off a straight conveyor, and loop sorters that carry parcels around a closed loop on individual carriers. The right type depends on throughput, parcel size and weight, how gently product must be handled, and available floor space. HOJ specifies and integrates parcel sorters as a vendor-neutral integrator, matching the sorter type to your operation rather than to one brand.

How does a parcel sorter work?

A parcel sorter runs three steps in sequence. First, induction places each parcel onto the sorter, manually or by an automated infeed, and a scanner reads its barcode or dimensions. Second, the warehouse control system looks up the destination and tracks the parcel along the line. Third, at the assigned point the sorter diverts the parcel, by sliding it across slats, running a powered carrier belt, tilting a tray, or pushing it off, into the chute or lane for its order, route, or carrier. Linear sorters perform this on a straight conveyor for lower to medium rates, while loop sorters circulate parcels on carriers for the highest throughput and the densest set of destinations.

What types of parcel sorters are there?

Parcel sorters divide into linear and loop families, and the right choice depends on rate, product, and footprint. The table below maps the main types HOJ integrates.

Sorter type

How it sorts

Best for

Sliding shoe

Guided shoes slide parcels across slats on a straight line

Cartons and mixed cases at high speed

Cross belt

Powered belt on each loop carrier runs the parcel off

Mixed parcels and fragile goods, recirculation

Tilt tray

Loop trays tilt to slide parcels off by gravity

Fragile and high-value goods, many chutes

Pouch

Overhead pouches sort, buffer, and sequence single items

E-commerce, apparel, returns, sequencing

Pop-up and narrow belt

Pop-up wheels or rollers divert at lower rates

Flat-bottom cartons and totes, lower cost

Where are parcel sorters used?

E-commerce fulfillment. Routing high volumes of mixed parcels to pack lanes and ship doors.

Parcel and postal hubs. Sorting packages to carrier, route, or regional destinations at scale.

Returns processing. Directing returned parcels to inspection, restock, or disposition lanes.

Retail distribution. Sorting cases and parcels for store replenishment by location.

Third-party logistics. Handling many clients and channels through one sortation line.

How do I choose the right parcel sorter?

Match the sorter to the operation, not the other way around. For high-speed sortation of cartons and cases on a straight line, a sliding shoe sorter gives a gentle positive divert. For mixed parcels, fragile goods, and dense destinations, a loop sorter fits: a cross belt sorter runs a powered belt per carrier and lets parcels recirculate, while a tilt tray sorter discharges gently by gravity. When the operation needs buffering and order sequencing rather than divert alone, an overhead pouch sorter sorts, stores, and sequences in one system. Lower-volume lines use pop-up wheel or narrow belt diverters at lower cost. The deciding factors are throughput, parcel size and weight, gentle handling needs, and floor space.

Testimonials

"When someone asks if they should automate, my answer is simple, call HOJ. I may not know every detail of automation, but I know they do"

- Mike Haslam

"Container unloading was hard on our workers. HOJ’s powered conveyor eliminated heavy lifting and turned it into a safer automated process."

- Michael Moser

"Automation removed a lot of manual prep work by automatically batching tasks based on our criteria. It freed up supervisors and managers and made daily execution much simpler."

- Todd Peay

"Having a local automation partner makes a huge difference. Being able to meet on site, walk the operation, and talk through ideas in real time leads to better solutions than phone calls or video meetings ever could."

- Scott Bryan
