A pallet shuttle is a semi-automated high-density storage system in which a battery-powered shuttle moves pallets along rails inside deep racking channels. Controlled by a Wi-Fi tablet, the shuttle stores and retrieves pallets without a forklift entering the lane, which raises storage density, speeds cycles, and removes the risk of rack strikes.

A pallet shuttle system, also known as a radio shuttle, satellite shuttle, or pallet runner, is a compact deep-lane storage solution. A battery-powered cart rides on rails inside a storage channel, lifts the pallet, and moves it to or from the lane entrance while the lift truck stays at the aisle face. Because each channel can hold a different SKU, the system keeps selectivity that drive-in racking loses, and channels can run far deeper than push-back or drive-in, more than 100 pallet positions in some installations. Shuttles are typically rated to 3,000 to 4,000 lbs and operate from freezer to ambient temperatures, which makes pallet shuttle a common choice for cold storage. How does a pallet shuttle system work?

A forklift places a pallet at the entrance of a storage channel and leaves. The pallet shuttle, a low-profile battery-powered cart riding on rails inside the channel, travels under the pallet, lifts it, and carries it deep into the lane to the first open position, compacting pallets toward the back. An operator directs the shuttle from a Wi-Fi tablet, and the shuttle handles all in-lane movement so the forklift never enters the rack. The system supports both FIFO and LIFO flow depending on whether load and retrieval happen at opposite ends or the same end. A four-way shuttle, such as the Geek+ X-series, moves along both axes of the rack, so one robot can serve many channels and levels instead of being moved between lanes by a transfer car.

Where are pallet shuttle systems used?

How is a pallet shuttle different from other AS/RS?

A pallet shuttle is semi-automated, high-density pallet storage inside racking, which sets it apart from other AS/RS in the family. A unit-load AS/RS uses a fully automated crane to store single-deep pallets at very high bays with full selectivity, where a pallet shuttle trades some selectivity for deep-lane density at lower cost. A miniload AS/RS handles totes and cartons, not pallets, for small-parts goods-to-person. Choose a pallet shuttle when you need dense pallet storage, cold-storage performance, and fewer forklift movements without the cost of a full crane AS/RS. Choose unit-load or miniload when selectivity or tote handling matters more than lane density.
