What is an accumulation conveyor?

An accumulation conveyor is a powered conveyor that lets product stop, queue, and release in zones without building back pressure on the items behind it. Each zone has its own drive and a photoeye or sensor that tells the controller whether the next zone is occupied.

Zero-pressure accumulation (ZPA) keeps products from touching each other entirely. Minimum-pressure accumulation allows light contact with regulated drive pressure.

As documented by Hytrol accumulation systems, eliminating back pressure prevents product damage and reduces jams in packaging, sorting, palletizing, and assembly buffering applications.

What are conveyor belts made of?

Industrial conveyor belts are built in layers. A top cover handles product contact, one or more carcass plies carry the load, skim coats bond everything together, and a bottom cover takes the wear from pulleys and rollers.

Common cover materials include natural and synthetic rubber (neoprene, nitrile, SBR, EPDM), thermoplastics like PVC and polyurethane, and specialty compounds for heat, oil, or food contact.

Carcass reinforcement uses polyester, nylon, cotton, or steel cord depending on tensile strength needed. Modular plastic belting uses interlocking polymer modules instead of a continuous belt and is common in food, beverage, and sanitary applications.

 

How do you track a conveyor belt?

Belt tracking means keeping the belt running straight down the center of the conveyor. Most mistracking traces back to a frame that is not square or level, debris built up on rollers or pulleys, uneven belt tension, or a belt that was spliced incorrectly.

The standard procedure: confirm the frame is square and level with a tape measure and spirit level, clean any debris from pulleys and rollers, check belt tension against the manufacturer specification, then make small adjustments at the snub rollers and idlers (not the drive pulley).

Let the belt run several full revolutions between adjustments before checking results.

 

What is a gravity conveyor?

A gravity conveyor moves product without electrical power, using either a slight downward incline or a manual push.

Two main types: gravity roller conveyors use long cylindrical rollers spanning the conveyor width and handle flat-bottomed cases, totes, and pallets. Skatewheel conveyors use small wheels mounted on shafts and handle lighter loads with better tracking on curves.

Gravity conveyors are common in packing lines, order picking, dock loading, and between-station transport in manufacturing because they use no energy, need almost no maintenance, and can be reconfigured by hand.

 

What safety standards apply to manufacturing conveyors?

Manufacturing conveyors fall under OSHA's general industry standards in 29 CFR Part 1910, plus industry consensus standards. There isn't one OSHA section dedicated to conveyors in general industry.

The protections come from several 1910 subparts: 1910.212 (general machine guarding), 1910.219 (mechanical power transmission), 1910.147 (lockout/tagout), and Subpart D (walking-working surfaces, including elevated walkways over equipment).

ASME B20.1, the consensus Safety Standard for Conveyors and Related Equipment, defines conveyor-specific design, construction, installation, and operating requirements, including emergency stops and walkway provisions.

ANSI Z535 governs safety signage and labels. Together, these require accessible emergency stops, guarded danger zones, elevated walkways where employees cross over moving conveyors, and lockout/tagout during maintenance.

How do you size a motor for a conveyor?

Motor sizing for a conveyor is driven by the total resistance the belt has to overcome. For bulk material belt conveyors, the standard reference is CEMA Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, which lays out the calculation: sum the resistance from moving the empty belt, the horizontal material weight, and any vertical lift, then divide by drive train efficiency to get required motor horsepower.

Unit handling conveyors that move boxes, totes, and pallets are sized the same way in principle, using manufacturer load tables built on CEMA unit handling standards. Inputs include belt width, conveyor length, lift height, load weight, belt speed, and friction factors for the idler and pulley arrangement.

Most engineering teams add a service factor and step up to the next standard motor frame size to handle peak loads and start-up torque.

 

What is a CDLR conveyor?

A CDLR conveyor, or chain driven live roller conveyor, is a powered conveyor where rollers are driven by chain, either one continuous chain running under all the roller sprockets, or in roller-to-roller (CRR) configuration where each roller has two sprockets and short chains connect each roller to the next.

CDLR is the standard for handling loaded pallets, drums, large totes, and heavy unit loads, typically running several hundred to several thousand pounds per pallet.

The chain drive holds up to abrasive environments, oil contamination, and temperature swings better than belt-driven alternatives.

Common applications include end-of-line palletizing, automated storage retrieval interfaces, and heavy-load transfers between work cells.

 

How do you measure conveyor speed?

Conveyor belt speed is measured directly with a tachometer or speed sensor mounted on the drive pulley shaft, or calculated from motor rpm and the gear reduction ratio.

A common field method is to mark a reference point on the belt, run the conveyor for a measured time, count the distance traveled, and divide.

Belt speed is expressed in feet per minute (fpm) or meters per second (m/s). Industrial conveyor speeds range widely: under 60 fpm for assembly lines that require precise positioning, 100 to 300 fpm for general transport and packaging, and 400 fpm or higher for high-throughput parcel sortation.

How long does a conveyor belt last?

Industrial conveyor belt life depends on belt construction, load weight, how many hours a day the belt runs, whether it runs indoors or outside in the weather, and maintenance discipline.

A well-maintained rubber belt running indoors on a typical single-shift operation commonly lasts 5 to 10 years; run the same belt around the clock and that window shrinks fast. Heavy-duty mining and aggregate belts run shorter because of abrasion and outdoor exposure.

Lightweight PVC or polyurethane food-grade belts often run 2 to 5 years. The fastest path to short belt life is chronic mistracking, overloading, exposure to oils or chemicals the belt was not specified for, and skipping inspections.

A preventive maintenance schedule tied to manufacturer recommendations can extend belt life by years compared to running equipment to failure.
