Hoist REpair Or Replace

When repair costs approach a new hoist, we say so and quote both. Obsolete unit? We source parts, fit upgrade kits like VFDs, or have a crane engineer plan a retrofit at no charge.

WHY OUR CUSTOMERS DON'T SHOP AROUND

"In four and a half years, I haven't been disappointed enough to even think about jumping to someone else. I just don't think about going to another vendor for cranes."

- Richard Takashita

"It doesn't do me any good if I get a building done but I'm waiting on gantry cranes. With HOJ engaged upfront, when I open the doors, the space is complete."

- Jake Greenland

"Our directors talked about adding more automated cranes. HOJ came up with a pick-to-light system instead. Took weeks to install and cost a fraction of what an automation overhaul would have. They told us when not to over-buy."

- Terry Wright

FAQs

Why do I need my hoist inspected?

Many hoists are not covered by the OSHA crane standard. OSHA 1910.179 applies only to hoists on top-running double girder bridge and gantry cranes, while hoists that are stationary or mounted on monorails, jib cranes, and single girder cranes fall under ASME B30.16, which requires its own inspections.

If your hoist has never had a documented inspection, it is likely out of compliance. HOJ's CICB certified inspectors inspect hoists of any brand.

How often does a hoist need to be inspected?

Three levels. A pre-use check each shift by the operator. Frequent inspections monthly for normal service, weekly for heavy service, and daily to weekly for severe service. Periodic inspections are detailed, documented examinations performed quarterly to annually depending on duty. A hoist idle for a month or more also needs inspection before returning to service.

Why is my electric hoist leaking oil?

Usually failed gearbox seals or gaskets. The leak itself is minor, but running a gearbox low on oil destroys gears and turns a seal job into a rebuild. Stop adding oil and losing it; have the seals replaced. HOJ stocks common gearbox parts for CM, R&M, and Kone hoists.

Why does my hoist brake slip?

Worn or out-of-adjustment brake components. A slipping brake means the hoist can no longer hold its rated load and should come out of service immediately. Brake service is one of our most common hoist repairs, and many are completed the same visit.

When should a load chain or wire rope be replaced?

When inspection finds stretch, wear, corrosion, broken wires, or deformed links beyond the manufacturer's limits. These are measured conditions, not judgment calls. Wire rope is the most common replacement we make, and we stock rope and chain for the brands we carry.

What brands of hoists do you repair?

Every brand, no matter who built or installed it. HOJ is the region's exclusive R&M dealer and performs factory-authorized warranty repairs for R&M, CM, ACCO, and Kone.

How long does a hoist repair take?

Many finish the same visit, since our trucks carry the wear parts that fail most. Repairs needing ordered parts take longer, but stocked parts ship same day and obsolete steel parts can be fabricated in-house instead of waiting weeks on an OEM.
