A decline conveyor is a powered belt conveyor that lowers product down a grade between two elevations under controlled speed. It uses a steel slider pan under the belt and a brake motor on the drive to prevent loads from running away or pushing the belt forward when the line stops, handing product off cleanly at the bottom.

How does a decline conveyor work?

A decline conveyor carries product from a higher elevation to a lower one on a belt driven against the direction of travel, so the motor acts as a brake rather than a pusher. The first 100 characters of buyer intent are simple: keep the load from running away. Gravity wants to accelerate product down the grade, so the drive provides retarding torque to hold a constant speed.

The design choices are the opposite of an incline. An incline belt rides on rollers to cut driving friction and keep horsepower low. A decline belt rides on a steel slider pan instead, because the higher friction between belt and pan stops product from pushing the belt forward when the conveyor is stopped. A brake motor on the drive prevents drift, and the slider pan friction extends the life of that brake. On steeper declines, raised cleats spaced to product length meter each item down at a controlled rate.

Where are decline conveyors used?

•   Feeding product down from elevated process lines to floor-level conveyor

•   Unloading from higher dock or building levels to staging

•   Controlled descent of fragile product that cannot free-fall or gravity-roll

Why does a decline conveyor need a brake?

Without retarding torque, gravity accelerates product down the grade and the load can backdrive the motor, sending items down out of control toward whatever sits at the bottom. A brake motor holds a constant descent speed and keeps the belt from drifting when the line stops. Pairing it with a steel slider pan adds friction that resists product pushing the belt, which also extends brake life. That combination is what separates a controlled decline from a safety hazard.
