Articulated robots are industrial robot arms built from rotary joints connected in series, typically with six axes of motion that mimic a human arm. They run welding, machine tending, palletizing, and material handling, with payloads spanning 4 kg tabletop arms to the 2,300 kg FANUC M-2000iA, the heaviest-lifting 6-axis robot in production.

Quick Facts

Axis count. Most articulated robots run six axes; four and seven axis configurations exist for simpler or more dexterous work.

Payload range. 4 kg (LR Mate 200iD/4S) to 2,300 kg (M-2000iA/2300) across the FANUC articulated line.

Reach. 550 mm to 3,734 mm across the same line.

Repeatability. +/- 0.02 mm on compact arms, +/- 0.30 mm on the 2,300 kg class.

Safety standards. ANSI/RIA R15.06 and ISO 10218 govern industrial robot cell design.

How does a 6-axis articulated robot work?

A 6-axis articulated robot positions and orients its tooling through six servo-driven rotary joints. J1 rotates the base, J2 moves the shoulder, and J3 moves the elbow; together these three axes place the wrist anywhere in the work envelope. J4 rolls the wrist, J5 pitches it, and J6 rotates the tool flange, orienting the end-of-arm tooling in roll, pitch, and yaw. Each joint runs a servo motor with encoder feedback in a closed loop, and a controller such as the FANUC R-30iB executes the motion program. The result is full positioning in x, y, and z plus any tool orientation, which is why articulated robot arms handle work no gantry or SCARA can reach.

What are articulated robots used for?

Welding. Arc and spot welding cells in metal fabrication and automotive.

Machine tending. Loading and unloading CNC machines, presses, and injection molders.

Palletizing. Case and bag palletizing at line rates manual labor cannot hold.

Material handling. Part transfer, container unloading, and heavy lift moves up to 2,300 kg.

Wash-down environments. IP69K-rated LR Mate variants run in food and pharmaceutical lines.

What problems do articulated robots solve?

Articulated robots remove the constraint that caps most production lines: repetitive manual stations that cannot hold rate. Robots run at roughly 95 percent duty-cycle efficiency against 20 to 25 percent for manual labor on the same shift, and repeatability of +/- 0.02 to +/- 0.05 mm holds tolerances hand work cannot, which cuts scrap and rework. One articulated arm on nights and weekends adds capacity without another hire.

Testimonials

"When someone asks if they should automate, my answer is simple, call HOJ. I may not know every detail of automation, but I know they do"

- Mike Haslam

"Container unloading was hard on our workers. HOJ’s powered conveyor eliminated heavy lifting and turned it into a safer automated process."

- Michael Moser

"Automation removed a lot of manual prep work by automatically batching tasks based on our criteria. It freed up supervisors and managers and made daily execution much simpler."

- Todd Peay

"Having a local automation partner makes a huge difference. Being able to meet on site, walk the operation, and talk through ideas in real time leads to better solutions than phone calls or video meetings ever could."

- Scott Bryan
