A floor mounted crane (free standing jib crane) is a self-supporting lifting device anchored to a foundation or qualified slab. A vertical mast supports a jib arm that slews to position the hook; freestanding models are engineered for up to 360 degree rotation.
Use a free standing jib when you need higher load capacity, longer spans, or full-circle coverage, or when the building structure can’t carry crane loads—wall/ceiling styles save floor space but trade off capacity and rotation.
Start with the heaviest load/heavy object and duty cycle, then pick a rated load capacity with margin. Confirm hook height (clearance under boom) and choose a span that reaches all pick/drop points. Many manufacturers design assuming the hoist weight equals ~15% of the crane rating, which factors into crane design.
Most free standing jibs provide up to 360 degree rotation; rotation stops can be added to limit swing, and collectors/swivels are used when continuous rotation is required.
Our dealership serves all of Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho.
Foundation-mounted free standing jibs typically require a reinforced concrete footing (e.g., 3,000 psi concrete with specified depth/width and anchors). Foundationless models exist; common requirements include a minimum 6-inch, 3,000 psi reinforced slab installed per ACI 318—capacity and span are limited on these. Always have a qualified professional verify slab/foundation.
Foundationless models can typically be unbolted and moved to another qualified slab; foundation-mounted columns can be relocated, but you’ll need a new footing at the new location. Plan power, anchors, and clearances before moving.
Manual chain hoists suit occasional picks; electric hoists excel for frequent cycles or heavy loads. Many jibs support powered trolley travel and powered rotation kits for precise positioning of the lifting device.
Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and maintenance schedule and general industry standards. OSHA 1910.179 governs overhead/gantry cranes (often used as a reference alongside ASME B30 series), and ASME B30.16 covers hoists commonly used on jibs. Provide training, rigging checks, clear swing paths, and required fall protection where workers are exposed to fall hazards.
An articulating jib crane shines in tight cells—its two-arm design reaches around obstacles. Choose a straight-boom free standing jib for longer spans, higher load capacity, and simpler layouts.
