A jib crane system uses a horizontal jib arm (boom) mounted to a column or wall; a hoist/trolley moves along the arm and the assembly rotates to service a circular work area. Jibs are offered as workstation jib crane solutions for repetitive tasks and industrial jib crane options for medium duty to heavy duty work—many designs rotate 180° or 360° as needed.
An overhead crane (bridge crane) spans a bay and travels on fixed runways to cover large rectangular areas; overhead cranes serve building-wide coverage. A jib focuses on a smaller circular zone at the point of use, rotating around its support.
Core components include a column or wall bracket, the jib arm/boom, a bearing/rotation assembly, trolley, hoist, controls, and—on freestanding units—baseplate/anchors or a foundation.
Common styles include freestanding/pillar-mounted, wall-mounted (cantilever or tie-rod), articulating jib crane (a two-arm articulating jib to reach around obstacles), workstation jib crane, and wall-traveling jibs (often informally called a track jib crane when the boom travels along a wall/rail).
Often, yes—but only after structural verification. OSHA recognizes a wall crane as a crane with a jib supported from a side wall or line of columns, and general requirements place responsibility on qualified engineering for modifications/rated loads.
Match the crane to your heavy loads, required radius (span), and hook height. Typical standard capacities range from a few hundred pounds up to 5 tons, with certain freestanding series reaching higher (e.g., up to 15 tons) and foundationless jib cranes covering lighter capacities (e.g., 1,000–2,000 lb) with 360° rotation. Always size for your worst-case load (including below-the-hook devices) and duty cycle (medium duty vs heavy duty).
At localized points of use—machining cells, assembly/packaging stations, loading docks, and maintenance bays—where a workstation jib crane or industrial jib crane improves ergonomics and throughput.
Freestanding jibs may require a designed footing; some foundationless jib cranes are slab-mounted to existing reinforced concrete. Spanco’s published criteria call for minimum slab thickness/strength and verification of reinforcement/soil bearing before use. Wall-mounted jibs depend on the building structure; a qualified engineer must confirm the wall/columns can take thrust, pull, and torsion.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 applies to overhead and gantry cranes, expressly including wall cranes (a jib supported from a wall/columns). Manufacturers also reference applicable industry standards in their specs (e.g., ANSI/ASME B30.11 and CMAA 74). Follow OSHA plus the standards cited for the specific system and hoist you select.
OSHA requires frequent inspections at daily to monthly intervals and periodic inspections at 1–12-month intervals (based on service severity). Keep records and follow the crane/hoist manual.
